No, it is fine to practice using watercolor paper until you are confident enough to begin using a specially prepared board. It is suggested that you purchase a product called "easy Gesso" from natural pigments .com for your first time gessoing watercolor paper or boards.
Yes, you need to make natural gesso which is more absorbent and therefore better for egg tempera than acrylic gesso.
